Ghana has reached the breaking point of dealing with the abundance of plastic waste in the entire country. Currently, the country produces 13,000 tons of waste daily of which 8 percent constitutes plastics. Much of the burden of waste collection is placed on the few waste management companies in Ghana, who only collect about 60 percent of daily waste produced. The residual waste uncollected waste often end up in the ocean, gutters, public places and other uninhabited areas in the country. This leads to the spread of cholera and other preventable diseases as well as flooding in slums and other areas with poor drainage. The ripple effect of this problem are twin tragedies such as the June 3rd floods and a massive cholera outbreak that Ghana experienced in 2015. It is also noteworthy that the current recycling companies operate at 500 tons below capacity. Salvage, therefore, seeks to tackle this problem through integrated stakeholder collaboration. Thus, our approach is to liaise with schools, homes and institutions to educate these stakeholders on how to create a circular plastics economy while identifying plastics as a resource which can be leveraged to boost global wealth. By forming recycling clubs in schools, we aim to train a generation of environmentally conscious youth who will take the issues of recycling, climate change and environmental sustainability as an individual yet a shared responsibility. We then sell the collected recyclable materials to existing recycling companies thereby shortening their supply chains and curbing the spread of diseases.
